Lorin Roche
Now 69, Lorin has been meditating since age 18, when he signed up to be part of a research project on the physiology of meditation. He was a control subject, and received no instructions whatsoever – they paid him to just sit in a totally dark and silent room in the lab every day for two hours a day for several weeks, and measure his brain waves. With no instructions, and never having heard of meditation (it was 1968), Lorin simply attended to the total silence and darkness, and entered entered a state of wide-awake sensory alertness combined with a level of relaxation he had never even conceived of. This gave him the feeling that meditation is a spontaneous and natural human experience, and he has spent the last 50 years researching and teaching this approach. Lorin received his Ph.D. in Social Science from the University of California at Irvine in 1987. His doctoral dissertation was about the language meditators come up with to describe their experiences. In other words, the maps they make to navigate their inner worlds. His Master’s Degree work focused on the hazards of meditation and the crisis points in a meditator’s development. Lorin trains meditation teachers around the world in a system he has developed that is based on human individuality. Interview data reveals that we each have our own unique approach to meditation, unique pathways into our inner worlds. We also need several different techniques to match who we are in our hearts and mind, and how we manifest in our outer life. meditationtt.com
